As soon as cameras were advanced enough to capture a living breathing likeness, and sitters were able to hold still for the prolonged exposures required, portrait photography was eagerly adopted by a public seeking lasting images of themselves and their loved ones. Its reputation for accuracy and truthfulness also made photography the ideal medium to record architectural, industrial, and commercial imagery, and cameras began to be carried all over the world to document expeditions and surveys of distant lands.
