Learn about the political and social developments that gave shape to Spanish history in the 20th century—from the country’s definitive loss of imperial status in 1898 through the establishment of its current democratic system in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Focus closely on the causes and aftermath of the Spanish Civil War (1936–39), one of the most devastating armed conflicts in European history, which resulted in the 36-year dictatorship of Francisco Franco.

Wan Tang, assistant professor, Department of Romance Languages and Literatures, and director of Asian American Studies, Boston College
