Time Lapse: Day 3, Attaching the New Lining

As one team of conservators removes the old lining on the back of the painting, another team follows to attach the new lining, made of handmade mino paper. Dilute wheat starch paste is applied to the mino paper to act as an adhesive before the paper is laid in position and smoothed with a brush. Five sheets of mino paper are required to complete the first lining. Later, a second lining will be added, placed with the grain of the paper perpendicular to the first lining, to strengthen the support.
