Inspired by Gardens

This clip from the 1915 silent film Ceux de Chez Nous (Those of Our Land) captures Claude Monet painting beside his famed water lily pond in Giverny. An ardent gardener, Monet planned and cultivated this property where he lived for 43 years, starting in 1883, and it became one of his greatest inspirations.

The camera pans the garden and focuses in on Monet, in a white suit, at work beneath broad umbrellas. The artist alternates between observing the pond and vegetation and adding brushstrokes to canvas. He pauses and leaves his work, walking along a winding path accompanied by a dog.

Ceux de Chez Nous, directed by Sacha Guitry. France, 1915. 2-minute clip; full film 22 minutes.
