Directed by Pascal Bonitzer (France, 2024, 91 mins.). French with English subtitles.
For his 10th film, renowned film critic Pascal Bonitzer (of the storied Cahiers du Cinema) has crafted a thrilling satire about the highbrow art world of Parisian auctioneers. Andr茅 Masson, a hotshot art broker at a premiere auction house, receives a letter from a lawyer claiming that a working-class family in the suburb of Mulhouse owns a painting by Egon Schiele. When an incredulous Andr茅 goes to investigate, he knows instantly that the painting is a genuine masterpiece that went missing in 1939. With the help of his colleague and ex-wife (L茅a Drucker), a compulsively lying intern (Louise Chevillotte), and a provincial lawyer (Nora Hamzawi), Andr茅 races to find a buyer for the prized work in what proves to be a delicate dance of deceit. Will this deal spark his meteoric rise, or the catastrophic end of his career?
鈥淪urely [Bonitzer鈥檚] smartest, sleekest, most wickedly assured script in a sixty-year career.鈥 This is one dazzling movie to get deliriously lost in.鈥 鈥Independent
