Directed by Mona Achache (France and Belgium, 2023, 95 min.). French with English subtitles.
French writer and photographer Carole Achache took her own life in 2016, leaving behind thousands of photos, letters and recordings. As her daughter, filmmaker Mona Achache, carries out the difficult work of archiving this trove, she finds herself searching for the source of her mother鈥檚 anguish. To help her make sense of Carole鈥檚 life and death, Mona enlists actress Marion Cotillard to embody her mother, wearing her clothes and reciting her recorded musings with Carole's exact tone and inflection. The result is a sui generis hybrid between documentary and drama that plumbs one of France鈥檚 great minds and brings out a complex array of treasures, among them a towering performance from Cotillard that earned a nomination for the C茅sar Award for Best Actress.
